ON NOVEMBER 12, 2015, PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCED ITS INTENT TO SELL 88.5FM KPLU.

Shortly thereafter, Friends of 88.5FM, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, was formed. With a mission to preserve 88.5FM as a vital and vibrant voice for local news, jazz and blues, Friends of 88.5FM sought to create an independent, community-owned public media entity at a cost of $7 million to be raised in only 5 months.

Passion Personified

Extraordinary community outreach - generated via SAVE KPLU - resulted in contributions totaling over $7 million dollars in only 137 days, illustrating Western Washington’s support of this beloved community institution.

  • 24,000+ donations ranging from 43 cents to $250,000

  • 85+ community organized fundraising events throughout the Puget Sound region

  • Broke the all-time GiveBIG fundraising record generating nearly $1.5 million from 7,600 donors

With funds secured to transition to a community-owned public media organization, 88.5FM looked to listeners once again — this time for suggestions for new call letters. From more than 2,000 submissions, KNKX emerged as a favorite for its significance of “connects.” 88.5FM KNKX connects Western Washington to a world of ideas with award-winning local reporting; national news, talk and entertainment from NPR; and artfully curated classic jazz and blues.
